Stuck on what to write in a supporting local card? This guide offers heartfelt message ideas and writing tips for a small business lover, including how to use a letterpress card.
Quick answer
Start with a personal anecdote about their business or favorite local spot, then write a message that celebrates their commitment to the community.
Why a blank-inside card gives you flexibility
The Supporting Local card from Sapling Press has a blank inside, which means you are free to write a message that matches the recipient's exact situation. This is ideal for a small business owner, a friend who always shops local, or a family member who runs a farmers market stand.
Match the tone to the recipient
For a business owner, keep the message warm but professional. For a friend, a more casual and funny note works well. The card's design already does the heavy lifting of showing you support their values, so your words can be straightforward.
How to write the perfect message
- Step 1: Start with a specific memory: Write about a time you visited their shop, bought something they recommended, or enjoyed a product they made. For example: 'I still think about that sourdough you brought to the picnic last summer.' Avoid generic phrases like 'You're so supportive of local.' Be specific.
- Step 2: Connect their action to a value: Explain why their support for local matters to you. For example: 'It inspires me to see you choose the independent bookstore over the big chain every time.' Don't list their accomplishments. Focus on one value, like community or craft.
- Step 3: End with a forward-looking wish: Close with a wish for their continued success or a plan to visit them soon. For example: 'Can't wait to see what you stock for the holidays. Keep doing you!' Skip a generic 'Happy Birthday' unless the card is specifically for a birthday.
